Definitive Doc Martin Box Set,
This review is from: Doc Martin - Series 1-5 [DVD] (DVD)
This is the definitive Doc Martin collection comprising the five series which have been released to date. Doc Martin was aired between 2004 and 2011 and there have been a total of 37 episodes broadcast plus the extended 2006 Christmas Special. However, it seems this set will contain some additional special features such as 'behind the scenes' and outtakes but the Special Edition is not included.
Doctor Martin Ellingham or Doc Martin was formerly a highly successful surgeon in a London hospital, who was forced to leave this job due to a fear of blood. He takes the job of GP in the sleepy Cornish village of Portwenn and is soon finding it difficult to relate to the locals due to what he considers his businesslike approach, but which is interpreted by those on the receiving end as standoffishness and a total lack of empathy and bedside manner. This extends to his personal life and his difficult relationship with the long suffering Louisa since he has very little in the way of people skills and a total inability to express emotion.
Portwenn is one of those places where nothing very significant seems to happen for a lot of the time, but which is inhabited by a gentle range of eccentric locals whom the stories are built around and the whole mix makes for very good and often quite amusing entertainment. Martin Clunes excels as Doc Martin and plays the part with a largely expressionless face except for the odd twinge of exasperation or irritation which occasionally crosses his brow. He has made this part his own and you really cannot imagine anyone else as Doc Martin. There is a very able supporting cast, but the principal characters have varied from series to series.
Although this contains the 5 series of Doc Martin to date, purchasers should be aware that Martin Clunes has recently indicated that there will probably be a sixth series, but that if there is it will very likely be the final series. I would have thought that Doc Martin was one of those scenarios where it was possible to keep producing fresh scripts so personally I am certainly hoping for more!
Update: Good News! The sixth season has now been confirmed and will be aired in 2013

It should be noted that it's quite likely that this series 1-5 collection will probably NOT include "On the Edge". Although the Series 1-3 set did include it, the Series 1-4 set did NOT include it (except for a particular bundle that was exclusive to Amazon.co.uk), so if you are considering this and need "On the Edge", you might want to wait until the details are announced (or a proper review comes out) so that if it's not included, you can be looking for another "exclusive" bundle.

The Christmas Special you refer to does not appear to be included in this box set - just the 5 series.

Yes, assuming their information is correct, but we have no way of knowing if that info was supplied by Momentum, or if Amazon filled in the number of discs themselves. With the 1-3 set, Momentum included 'On the Edge'. With 1-4, they did not, so who knows for sure what they'll do this time (until someone gets hold of a copy). Glad it all a moot point as far as I'm concerned (I've got all four series plus 'On the Edge' already, so will be buying the individual S5 when it comes down to about a fiver).

True, but at present on the many sites offering an advance purchase of this set, only series 1-5 are mentioned so this seems to be the info being supplied by Momentum. However, perhaps they will surprise us.

you are probably correct, but the reason I mentioned it was that, with the 1-3 set, they DID include it, so who knows what they'll do this time! If I hadn't already bought them one-at-a-time, I'd probably have bought this collection or the previous one. Excellent deal for those who haven't bought any of it yet!

I emailed Momentum yesterday and, surprisingly, they've already emailed me back. As you correctly guessed, the release will NOT include "On the Edge", so those who don't have it will still need to track it down.
I also asked if there were any chance of a series 5 Blu-Ray (since series 5 was made/shown in HD). He said none was planned at present, though they might consider it at a later time when they re-release back catalogue stuff (so probably no time soon, if ever).
