This is an utterly charming record - ten times more enjoyable than this year's boring 'Together Through Life', and a much more worthy addition to the Dylan canon. Uncle Bob, after all, has a long tradition of rehabilitating unloved musical genres and wrong-footing his fans. Going electric, going gospel, going country.. and now it's Bob's Christmas album. And it's great! I've been playing it more or less non stop for the past three days, and it already feels as comfy as a new pair of slippers by the fire on Christmas afternoon. It's just a self-sung 'Theme Time' really, but what a judiciously-selected stocking full of Christmas chestnuts it is. I was expecting to hate this, but it's a warm, confident, big-hearted record, the sound is great, Bob's vocals are as cranky as you'd expect, it's all for charidee, and on 'Christmas Island' you get the inestimable bonus of Dylan Goes Hawaii.
