Customer Review

4.0 out of 5 stars High Quality Albums, 19 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Women's Love Rights / Two Sides Of Laura Lee / I Can't Make It Alone...Plus (Audio CD)
Much as I love Laura Lee's voice, I do not feel that these albums gave her the best material to work with, being rather formulaic and of their time. I much prefer her output on Chess. These albums, however, are great value for money with invariably excellent vocal performances.

Thank you for your review. I think her Chess tracks are much better too;but there are still some great tracks here and Laura Lee's wonderful voice more than compensates for some of the undistinguished material here. A singer of Laura Lee's abilities undoubtedly deserved better material;but anyone who loves her singing should still find allot to enjoy here. For anyone new to Laura Lee,go for her Chess recordings first.......then buy this!

Update Dec 25th 2016: Listening to it now.....for the second time in a row! Yes,I judt love that distinctive, husky voice. Yes,the material is uneven and could be better;but like the best singers she transcends her material....she makes it sound a little (allot) better than it actually is. And there are some nice tracks. Well worth acquiring if you like soul from this era. I just put this on after listening to Millie Jackson,Barbara Mason and Miinnie Riperton;and Laura Lee sounds none the worse for being in their company. Take Mr Jones' advice though and get her Chess recordings first! But don't ignore this set!
