Customer Review

on 30 July 2005
The Dawn of the Replicants Debut album was first brought to my attention whilst at college in 1998. I was studying a media HND and was occasionaly privy to the new and the cutting edge (Shame I didnt get an education to go with all that?)
I heard "Rule the Roost" the Replicants break-out single and at first was non-plussed. An apparently a-tonal nightmare, I couldnt see the appeal in this band and yet....
I kept listening to it and then the album, which featured weird songs with weird names. And eventually, it all started to make sense. That or I had lost my mind.
This album is a truly original piece or work, full of eerie themes, brilliant lyrics and dark music. It wont be to everyones taste (indeed it wasnt to mine at first) but it grows on you fast.
From the growling bizzare "Rule the Roost" to the uplifting "Zulu Kites" to the brassy "Hand Relief" to the quirky "Tear Dog Eyed" , the album is a bizzare and brilliant journey that is both amusing and a great piece of music. Even if you dont pick up on the bizzare lyrics and titles, the music itself, a strange mix of country, dance and classic indie, is great!
The true classic track is the closing anthem "Fearless Vampire Hunters" which ranks among one of rhe better tunes you will ever hear.
Give it a go, take a trip into the strange places that the replicants have seen and see if you are really one of us?
Highly recomended
