Engaging aussie torture movie,
This review is from: The Loved Ones [DVD] (DVD)
A girl called Lola "Princess" (a chilling performance by Robin Mcleavy) gets rejected by Brent (Xavier Samuel) who she asked to the prom so her "daddy" (John Brumpton) kidnaps him and they make him suffer. He isn't the first, it turns out quite a few have gone missing..
This isn't scary but there is alot of blood and a little gore, which is realistically done. It's very colourfully shot which, combined with the intense acting, gives it an almost surreal look during the torture scenes. The acting is pretty good although I wasn't totally convinced by Brent. He also seemed pretty superhuman to me.. The best thing about this though are the two characters Lola and her equally psychotic "daddy", they steal the show and are a very terrifying pairing. Lola is also pretty hot, psychotic yeah but I would eat her chicken and dance with her any day of the week.
A few negatives, theres a hopelessly pointless long subplot involving a fat kid and a goth girl that is just there to lengthen the film. It's very loosely linked by the goth girl's brother being one of the missing victims but really who cares, it doesn't go anywhere (I can't even remember their names). It adds some reality between all the torture stuff but it would have been good if it actually added something to the main story or the ending, instead it's just filler.. Theres also a cliche scene involving a cop who investigates and what happens is beyond obvious and you can see coming before he even turned up. I also think it could have benefitted from having a bit of a backstory with Lola and her dad. And the ending isn't anything memorable at all, it's also slightly ridiculous and disappointingly the whole film builds up to nothing.
It's nothing original but is a better than average torture movie and if you liked films like Wolf's Creek or Hostel this is well worth checking out. I give it 3 though thats being on the generous side of 2.5 stars..
