This review is from: Uncle Bill: The Authorised Biography of Field Marshal Viscount Slim (Hardcover)
Facinating story of a 'ranker' rising to the top, and some of the lesser known stories of the 'Fotgotten Army' of WW2. Brilliantly written.. I real 'page turner'.

Thomas S-R says:
He was never a ranker, as is made very clear early on in the book. He was an OTC Officer Cadet who dreamed of joining as an officer but could not afford it, until World War One required a mass recruitment of officers, in which he got his first commission as a second lieutenant. He never once served in the ranks, he was just a down to earth middle class man even when a Field Marshal and Viscount.
