A History of the British Presence in Chile,
This review is from: A History of the British Presence in Chile: From Bloody Mary to Charles Darwin and the Decline of British Influence (Hardcover)
Really good! A definite 'must have' for anyone who wants the low-down on the Bits in Chile. The author must have read 200 books, turned them upside down, and shaken out every last Brit it's so comprehensive. They're easy to find too - they are grouped together interestingly and there's a good index at the back. I found the early chapters absolutely fascinating - the ones on British pirates, explorers and naturalists but I learnt a lot from the meaty chapters in the middle on mining, railways, commerce and Chile's wars. I didn't know Britsh midshipmen ever fought for Chile! Good book - it fills a gap.
