I am of the belief that Temples' debut album "Sun Structures" is nothing short of stellar, and surely one of the best, if not the very best album, of this year (so far). I recently saw Temples in concert (more on that later), and afterwards decided I just HAD to have this release. (I was hoping they would have it at the merch booth, but that was not the case.)
"Shelter Song EP" (5 tracks; 20 min.) starts with the title track, the song that has put Temples on the map (but for me one of their "weaker" tracks). It is followed by a fantastic "Prisms", a light romp that features plenty of mellotrons. I just wished it would go longer than its 3 minutes' running time. Then comes "Colours to Life", a standout that is on the debut album (and since then also released as a UK single. The 4th track is "Ankh", another must-have Temples song with great hooks and lush instrumentation. The EP closes with "Jewel Of Mine Eye", on okay track, but clearly not up to the same standard as the other songs. But it's a minor quibble. If you are, like me, desperate for additional material from the band that is not on the debut album, this EP is a MUST HAVE. As an aside, I bought this EP from a reseller here on Amazon who is in Japan (as this is a Japanese release) and I received this in a matter of a week or so, very nice. Equally great is that it contains a booklet with the lyrics, both in Japanese and English (the US release of the debut album does not have the lyrics to the songs).
I saw Temples in concert a few weeks ago here in Ohio, and what an incredible 60 min. set that was, confirming the talent that you hear on the studio tracks in a live setting, and then some. They played of course Shelter Song and Colours to Life, but also Prisms and Ankh from this EP, reason I just HAD to buy this. This band is going places. If you have a chance to see them live, do not miss them! Meanwhile, "Shelter Song EP" is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
