I thoroughly enjoy this performance and this recording of works that are too rarely played in the concert hall. I would love to see these works sometimes substituted for Sibelius, Vaughan Williams, Walton and Holst. They are well worth discovering. There is a lovely freshness and vitality in them. Although one reviewer has criticised the balance of the recording being more towards the brass and percussion, I actually very much enjoy and appreciate that. The orchestra and the conductor seem to enjoy what they are doing and that is worth something. I also like the recording space occupied by these works. I have never been to the Wessex Hall in the Poole Arts Centre but it sounds good.
