This review is from: Rangers 1872: The Gallant Pioneers (Hardcover)
Ok, admittedly first and foremost this is an essential read for any Rangers fan. It unearths many wonderful gems of information of how this great club was formed and ultimately thrived in its early years. But it's a deeper tale than that. It tells the story of how a bunch of young men from the Gareloch were lured into Glasgow during the industrial boom in Glasgow. So not only is it a football book but it also provides (both in picture and text) a wonderful insight into Glasgow in the 1870's and 80's.
Life was undoubtedly tough then and fame and fortune did not materialise for the majority of these "gallant pioneers". Mental illness and tragedy at sea awaited some of the founders of the world's most successful club. So if you're a football anywhere in the UK (especially Lincoln City fans!!) then why not give this book a try. I'm sure it will provide inspiration for many football historians, amateur or otherwise, that there are so many tales to unearth about the early years for many football clubs around the world.
