I am a big fan of Carla Kelly's writing. And don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed this book. It would have gained the full five stars though if the central relationship had been kept in the foreground. It seemed to me that the heroine almost accepts second-best, since the story is mainly told from the perspective of a third person. I know the hero's goodness triumphs over the poor behaviour of the other chap... but it almost feels as though Carla changed her mind half way through about how the book would end. It's still an engrossing, enjoyable story... but it's not got the sheer emotional power of, say, One Good Turn, which is linked by character. Buy it anyway - after all, a middling Carla Kelly is still way ahead of many other authors!
