This "Hits" collection is less one of very recent chart material (only four tracks were in the Top 40 at its release date) but more a review of the whole year's output from the Sony/BMG/Warners labels, on which basis it works very well, with a lot of big names and big hits featured. The content, as ever, covers the mainstream and as many tastes as possible; you won't like it all but you will like some of it. With a nice sense of symmetry there are 60 tracks, and with a running time of three and a half hours, your average office Christmas party music requirements are sorted. It is, however, effectively a compilation from Hits 57, 58 and 59, with the four recent tracks added, together with a few which were slated for inclusion in those issues and dropped at the last minute (eg Muse, Damien Rice and the Zutons). This does rather reinforce the impression that the last two Hits albums were a bit thin on quality. I held back from buying them at the time, and my patience has now been rewarded.
