Sorry everyone! I loved this book as a child in the 70s and so bought it for my young daughter. It did not hold her interest and ,in fact, as I read it, we both found it quite depressing. Not how I remembered it. Dissapointed.

the devil's advocate says:
Sorry to cast aspersions on your story-telling prowess, but perhaps it was your dissapointing delivery of the story that failed to impress, rather than the story itself. Even Shakespeare can fail to enchant if delivered in a boring, disinterested Brummie accent! My 6 and 8 year olds loved it. Maybe you should try it again in the future, but read by someone else!

That's quite rude. Maybe the reviewer is the country's leading voiceover actor? You wouldn't know what his/her delivery is like.
The review states the story was tried on a child, and it wasn't to the child's taste. Children are individuals too, and can have their own preferences.
