An excellent biography,
This review is from: Johnny: The Legend and Tragedy of General Sir Ian Hamilton (Hardcover)
This is a superb biography, well written and well illustrated, about a general who deserves to be remembered. It is not, incidentally, written by an American. Although the author lives, and has worked, in the US he is British and was educated in the UK - as the dustjacket informs us!
The author also provides an interesting insight into the British Army of the late nineteenth century and the small wars of empire. But he makes it clear that Hamilton was a thoughtful and intelligent soldier whose misfortune it was to be placed in command of an under-resourced and poorly planned expedition. Even had it succeeded the Gallipoli campaign was unlikely to have had any great strategic results as Germany would still have had to be beaten on the Western Front, the theatre that really mattered. Both Kitchener and Hamilton realised this.
A book well worth buying.
