Being a big fan of the work of Patrick O'Brien, I was very excited, and very dubious, to learn that a film adaptation was in progress. The story in the film is a combination of two of the volumes of the Aubrey/Maturin series, and blends them very well. The two main characters don't have time in the films to develop their personalities (there are over 25 books in the series) but the two actors do well to show how different they are; it is this difference which works so well throughout their relationship. I have to say that it is Bettany that stands out for me, out-acting Crowe. This may just be me, as I identify with Maturin more than Aubrey! So overall a great action film with a bit of thought as well. I guess it is too much to ask for a sequel; after all, it is a joke in the movie world that the most feared phrase to anyone financing a film is ' the two fleets meet'. If you like the film and have not read any of the books, I would urge you to give them a go as well.
