3.0 out of 5 stars It's all about the journey..., 7 Jun. 2011
By
This review is from: The Evolutionary Void (Paperback)
Some say that in life, it's not the destination that's important but the journey that gets you there. If this is a philosophy that appeals to you then you'll have no problems with Peter F Hamilton's work, where his talent for writing compulsive sci-fi is invariably let down by his apparent inability to come up with a decent ending.

This trilogy really has been thoroughly absorbing and entertaining, and I raced through this final installment as the tension built and the final coming-together of all the various strands approached. And then...(spoiler?) everybody kind of stands around, asks the 'bad guy' nicely to stop destroying the galaxy, please...and he does. The supposedly massively powerful and evil Ilanthe-thing watches and doesn't do much as her plan to conquer the universe goes by the wayside, and then just wanders off. And everybody else lives happily ever after because they made their dreams come true just before the Void collapsed.

It's such a shame, to come so far and build such a fascinating story, only to have it peter out at the last (much like the Night's Dawn trilogy and the Commonwealth Saga). So, an enjoyable journey, shame about the destination.

Also, don't make the mistake I did and read this 18 months or so after the previous book -- Hamilton makes no allowances for anyone who doesn't remember all the various characters and what they're up to, so you might have some trouble getting up-to-speed at the start.
