This review is from: Red Watch: A True Story (Paperback)
I was a fireman, and I joined the Red Watch a few months after the fire. I felt a bit of an outsider, because most of the men who had fought the fire were still there, and I was a replacement, transferring from another station. A year later i was involved in a serious RTA, (road traffic accident) that saw me laid up in hospital for 12 weeks. During that time Neil Wallington - one of the main charecters in the book - visited me while I was still strapped up in a hospital bed. He gave me a proof copy of Red Watch. I read it that night by the light of a reading lamp whilst the rest of the ward was asleep. I wept, I admit it. I loaned it to one of the night nurses who's husband was also a fireman - she wept. If you know nothing of the fire service, or even if you do, read this book, it is true, it is real.
