3.0 out of 5 stars Nearly Perfect - Until you start getting into it, 24 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Star Trek: The Next Generation - Season 1 [Blu-ray] [Region Free] (Blu-ray)
Sadly I can't give this the full 5 stars as the audio mix is wrong in EaF.

The centre speaker is mixed with the front right speaker so the dialogue all sounds like it is coming from the corner of my living room.

The remastering is superb, and the amount of work that has gone into this project makes me happy to buy at this price.

Frustrating though that the audio was not checked, especially as the audio is mixed correctly on the sampler disk.

I have knocked a further * off this review as more and more audio problems crop up as you go through the set.

The stereo audio track for EaF has synching problems as do the the extras, one of the wrongly mixed 7:1 tracks gets out of synch with itself so you get a bit of echo on Haven.

Is this problem only in 'Farpoint'? Very strange that something like this would pass quality control with all the work thats gone into the episodes....

Farpoint is the worst offender but the mix is wrong in other episodes.

I have only checked Farpoint personally but I believe that the centre dialogue is spread over all 3 front speakers for:
"Hide and Q"
"Haven"
"The Big Goodbye"
"Datalore"
"11001001"
"Too Short a Season"

Supposedly it isn't as distracting as Farpoint though as it is at least balanced.

I was concerned about the sound mix on these new dvds when I bought the taster disc earlier this year.7.1 DTS is great if you have the set up but I only have 5.1 DTS so the sound is mixed down to that but the sound doesnt seem to have the proper rear effects that were present on the original dvd mix which was in normal 5.1.Yes you can select the original stereo sound on these new dvds but then you lose the 5.1.Why they didnt include an option for the previous 5.1 mix is very strange and unfair to those who cannot afford an expensive 7.1 setup.

Thanks for that. Its a good, comprehensive read. Well done for picking up on it yourself because it was missed in the review site i frequent :/ Its really so disappointing as I was really looking forward to revisiting this series again. Any word on if youll be getting a replacement set/disks sent to you?

Digital Bits say CBS are investigating, it's too early to say what if any the solution will be.

Maybe a disk replacement programme down the line.

It's pretty poor that none of the reviewers picked up on this as its pretty obvious as soon as you start to watch the 1st episode.

It's still an impressive set, the visuals are amazing.

I just finished watching the episode "Justice" and at 9 minutes 15Secs into the episode I did notice that one of the voices did echo around several speakers at the front only lasted a few seconds, but it was there.

Curious as its not one of the episodes listed.

Seems that this has been pulled in Australia ahead of their release, probably going to come out in September over there with a new pressing of the discs.

I have this problem too. Makes HAVEN unwatchable. I pretty much screwed up my surround sound settings to get this to play without sounding like I was watching underwater... to no avail. Glad its not me and my setup in a way, but hugely disappointed no one thought to watch these things through before selling them!?!?!?!
