This review is from: Poirot and Me (Hardcover)
This is a very readable and highly enjoyable autobiography of that national treasure, Mr David Suchet. As the title suggests, much of the book concerns his (and Agatha Christie's) most famous creation, Hercule Poirot. There is much more to it however.

Suchet recalls his introduction to the role and gives at least a few lines to each of the adaptations. He discusses cast and crew but never gives away conclusions to the stories, so any readers who haven't been with him these 25 years won't have the endings spoiled.

Suchet must have a bulging compendium of clippings as he proudly quotes his glowing reviews for Poirot and the many other stage and screen productions he has worked on. This never comes across as self congratulatory or conceited however, more an accurate reflection of the high regard in which he is held. That does really set the tone of the book, he comes across as a very nice and normal person. He deeply cares about his work and providing a good performance and not letting anyone down, least of all Agatha Christie.

A few autobiographical titbits are woven into this book, and he discusses his other projects, mainly those during the Poirot years. Fans of the tv series will enjoy his reminiscences of filming, but it isn't full of facts and figures on the production. The market must be wide open for an encyclopedia on the tv series. Nevertheless, there is much to enjoy.

A must read for fans of Poirot, both in print and on screen, and a wonderful glimpse into the mind of this wonderful actor.

I received this book as a Christmas present and it's wonderful. A friend told me they missed out one of the Poirot short stories in the TV adaptations, can this really be true? I don't think so! David Suchet shows in his book that it's not only talent but very hard work and dedicated determination that brings success plus having a wife who gives her all for her husband!
