Gordon Doherty obviously has a very good grasp of late Roman history, and the way he weaves the fiction into the fact is acceptable. But I did get a tad bored with cavalry soldiers falling off their horses "like a sack of wet sand", and other such similes. Dear Mr Doherty, Had you been a little more imaginative in your descriptive narrative, the whole book would be transformed. However I liked Pavo and fancied Gallus, so you didn't do too badly.
