An enjoyable slice of the Cold War...,
This review is from: The Charm School (Paperback)
While certainly a product of its time, The Charm School does a nice job of putting you in the position of outsiders within Soviet Russia. While I initially expected something a lot more "Clancyesque", it's surprising how much you gain from reading about the characters' experiences in Moscow. This, combined with the espionage and intrigue that the story promises, leads to an interesting book - a view of a bygone sociopolitical situation.
One thing that did irk me slightly was how obviously the author was trying to hammer the "Communism = EVIL" idea into the reader's mind throughout the story, but if you can accept this as also a product of the time and place it was written, it doesn't get in the way too much.
