First, let me say that I am NOT a football fan, never have been and never will be; however, I am a fan of fantastic, well crafted writing and deep character studies. This book was given to me by a trusted friend and I will be forever thankful to said friend, because this book is a wonderful and increasingly rare thing, it is a book written from the heart and it has soul.
We get a peek into the life of a guy who came so close to achieving his dream, but then for one reason and another the dream evaporated. What is left is the dark and lonely existence of someone who is trying to fiigure out where it all went wrong, and how do you find a way to climb out of the malase. This author uses evocative and powerful prose to add layers of depth and meaning to his central character, which allows the reader to feel like we really know him. We are taken on a journey of discovery along with Nige Honey, into a darkly poetic reality, which anybody who has ever chased their dreams but somehow come up short can empathise and relate to.
This novel has moments of absolute hilarity and deep pathos, skillyfully blended by an emerging master story teller, to produce a rich and complex story, that is both entertaining, but also has something important to say about life and our own fragile dreams. Mr. Wagstaffe is an author to watch out for.
If you love football this is a great novel for you and even if you don't, it is still well worth buying. Put simply, it's fantastic.
