4.0 out of 5 stars Devolo dLan 500 AV Triple - Slightly suspect., 25 Feb. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Devolo dLAN 500 AV Triple+ Add-On Powerline Adapter (3 GB LAN Ports, Pass Through, 500 Mbps) (Electronics)
Initially, I bought one of these units with the idea of adding it to my existing Devolo homeplug network, (blue plug models) which I'd been using since November 2011. So just a three months old at the time of this new purchase. To my intense annoyance, I discovered upon receipt that the two Devolo products are NOT compatible tech. There is no mention of this that I could find on the Amazon page.

I applied for a returns number, but then discovered via Devolo that while their 'blue' plugs and 'white' plugs work on differing frequencies and never in tandem, they can coexist happily. So, what I ended up doing was buying another 'white' Devolo unit, which I set up with my router and home office PC. The original 'white' plug was then available for use in the lounge to link the Smart TV, Home Cinema (inc Net radio) and PC that live there.

The older 'blue' Devolo plugs are now used to homeplug separate PCs from different parts of the house. They are actually on a different ring-main, but I am led to believe that this does not make much difference. It is, however, advisable to have plugs of the same type on the same ring-main. The dual setup now works very much quicker than the wireless arrangement I had before. Albeit, at double the expense that I'd anticipated. But hey, unless the Buddhists are right, we only live once. ;-)

In summary, I can recommend both systems, either separately or together, just as long as you are not ever expecting them to work in tandem.

EDIT - Feb 2013. Less than a year after buying this, the plug expired, requiring me to buy a new unit, or change the whole system. I don't expect things to last forever, but this is a plug that connects Ethernet cables. No moving parts. I think it fair to expect that it should last a reasonable amount of time.

Belcar says:
Re the failure you note this month - I have also had two AVtriple+ units die this weekend, 6-7 months after purchase, whilst an AVplus unit bought at the same time continues to work. It's only their network capabilities that have failed (none of the status lights come on) and the integrated power socket is fine.

I have to suggest - if you have not done this already - both Devolo support, and Amazon, were happy to discuss return & replacement of the devices this morning. At worst, with the 3 year manufacturer warranty - talk to them about replacement. It would involve sending the device, with an agreed RMA, to Germany, but their support team say this should only take a couple of days to turn around once received.

If you need a quicker replacement, but can cope for a few days, try Amazon customer support instead, assuming you bought them here.

I've had exactly the same problem with these adaptors ceasing to work after a few months. The first one "expired" after about five months and just now the other after just over eight months.
Amazon have a no quibble return policy, so I've not lost out so far, but how long after the year-long guarantee will the replacements last I wonder?
Not impressed.
