Fantastic joie de vivre and inventiveness permeate this mould-breaking film. On New Year's Eve 1999 young Parisian, Arthur (Romain Duris), attends a fancy dress party at his friends' flat. The costume theme is 'the future'. Here he argues with his girlfriend about the vexed question of settling down and having children. While she goes off in a huff Arthur notices something odd about a ceiling panel in the bathroom....it is, in fact, a portal to the year 2070! Here he finds Paris transformed by environmental catastrophe and cheerfully reverted to a low-tech agrarian economy, the Hausmann boulevards buried almost to their roofs in sand, a spectacular feat of set-building. He also finds an intimidatingly huge extended family waiting for him, headed by his son (Jean-Paul Belmondo in fine form). Arthur is forced to face the reality of his own insignificance in the grand scheme of time and DNA. A film which is both thought-provoking and hilarious in equal measure. It also has one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard including an extensive cameo performance by Screamin Jay Hawkins.

Great review but it would also help to be told if there are subtitles in English, for those of us whose French is not that good.
