1.0 out of 5 stars Oh dear, I feel thick, 29 Dec. 2011

This review is from: Stitch 'n Bitch Crochet: The Happy Hooker (Paperback)
Having read all the other reviews about how great this book is I felt I couldn't go wrong. Wanting to learn a new skill I invested in the book, some crochet hooks and some 100% acrylic wool. 5 frustrating hours later and having resorted to YouTube clips I can still only make a chain. I don't find the instructions or the diagrams easy at all. I fear I am either very thick or I am reading something different to all the other reviewers. Maybe I am using the wrong type of yarn as I can't even see the V's and the Butts that the book keeps referring to. I am one very unhappy and demoralised hooker. Still, I seem to be the only person who feels this way about the book so, hey, don't listen to me. Maybe it will work for you.

I know how you feel! I came unstuck right after 'how to make a foundation chain too' - I frankly think she overcomplicates matters here. I'm now using a combination of this book and youtube - there are some great instructional videos on there that actually SHOW you where to put your hook which has helped me enormously. Have a look at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GyVPUBgDnJg&list=PL59FA9DF4C757945B&index=2&feature=plpp_video - hope this helps :)

If you're still stuck I recommend Kids Learn to Crochet - meant for tots but I'm 29 and it did the job!

Oh, I know exactly how you feel - I took up crochet last year and had family and friends in hysterics as my umpteenth attempt at a granny square was like a christmas stocking and my next one was perfect for a hamster bonnet! Keep at it though, after all sorts of books and 'you tube' tutorials, I finally found a blog by Little Tin Bird which did it for me, and I am now completely 'hooked'!
