Many years ago I was present at Bristol's Colston Hall when Boult conducted the Planets with the CBSO. As Mars reached its climax I felt my scalp tighten and start to move further up my skull. I have heard nothing like it since. The superb recording comes very close to it. It's nice to know that one of the greatest works of English music (The Enigma Variations) is referred by one reviewer as "not bad". If Edu was around now he would be so chuffed.
