Wonderful Schumann, poor sound,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Schumann: Symphony No.4 / Debussy:La Mer. / Debussy: Le Martyre de Saint Sebastien Suite (Audio CD)
This is a 1954 live recording and there is a studio recording made a few days after this performance. The sound is not very good and I have not really adjusted to it. The performance of the Schumann is wonderful and one wonders why modern performances are not so vital. The drums really are prominent without being over emphasised. The Debussy items interest me less because the sound seems to work against them more than in the Schumann, though the orchestral playing is very fine.
One annoying feature in the Schumann is the long silent break between the first two movements, where Schumann asks for no break at all.
[April 2014. I have listened to this disc a lot recently and I have to admit that I was far too harsh with my comments above. Yes, the sound is not up to today's standards but then it was a live performance recorded in 1954 in mono !! The performances are superb and one gets over the sound quality and to be truthful it is excellent for the day. I am beginning to treasure this disc. So, I must upgrade from 3 stars to 4.]
