Great start to a outstanding series,
This review is from: Dexter: Complete Season 1 [DVD] (DVD)
Showtime presents the highly acclaimed, multiple emmy and golden globe award winning Dexter.
Dexter Morgan (Michael C Hall) is just an average guy. He works as a blood spatter, forensics expert for the Miami Police Department helping to solve murders and other violent crimes. He has a relationship with Rita (Julie Benz) a damaged mother of two young children, who has been involved in a violent marriage. He is brother to Debra (Jennifer Carpenter) an insecure and vulnerable rookie detective with the Miami Police Department.
However, Dexter hides a terrible secret.
Under the Mr Average persona lurks a monster. A monster created by a terrible event in his childhood - An event so appalling Dexter has blocked out all memory - But still lives with the consequences of the damage every day.
Dexter Morgan is a serial killer! But he is no ordinary serial killer. He lives by his own moral code, drummed into him by his late father, Detective Harry Morgan (James Remar)
Dexter only targets killers and murderers who have hitherto escaped justice through the inadequacies of the justice system. Revenge has never been more delicious than when Dexter has an evil peadophile or hit and run driver helpless on his "operating table."
As season one evolves Dexter becomes drawn into a deadly game of cat and mouse with the notorious Ice Truck Killer - A game that slowly peels back the layers of Dexters long forgotten past and reveals the events that will shape his future.
The acting, script and pace of Dexter is second to none. Julie Benz and Jennifer Carpenter help ground Dexter is a sense of reality. This show could easily become a cliche and Dexter a pantomine character, but thanks in particular to Benz's senstive portrayal of spousal abuse victim Rita, Dexter always remains grounded in reality.
The supporting cast is also excellent. Lauren Vélez, CS Lee and David Zayas play Dexters co workers. Special recognition also has to go to Erik King who plays the fiery Sgt James Doakes, the only one who can see through Dexters "nice guy" persona and sets out to discover Dexters "secrets" Also look out for a chilling stand out turn from Christian Camargo as the Ice Truck Killer.
Not everything about Dexter is perfect. Some of the humour occasionally fails to hit the mark. The profanity, particularly from Debra, is sometimes grating and needless - Yes it makes sense that the people living in the very stressful and macho world of law enforcement would swear, but it does sometimes feel as though the show is doing it for shock value (its interesting that serial killer Dexter hardly ever uses profanity, even when he is murdering people, while Debra is extremely coarse)
It goes without saying that Dexter is pretty grumesome, so its not for anyone easily upset - Though to be honest you see surprisingly little blood and gore, considering the dark subject matter.
Dexter is, essentially, Michael C Halls show. It is his stand out performance that holds the series together. He hits just the right note, managing to play both a good guy and a bad guy simultaneously. By the climax you'll be rooting for Dexter to prevail, which means not getting caught by the police and being able to "deal" with the Ice Truck Killer. That the audiance can root for a serial killer to evade justice and commit murder is the genius of Dexter.
This series will stay with you long after you've finished viewing - Unless you decide to move to Season Two of course, which is what I'll be reviewing next.
Conclussion: **** An outstanding start to a truely ground breaking and original series.
