5.0 out of 5 stars Sorry, but we're going to have play live tonight !!, 6 May 2008
This review is from: Rare and Unissued (Audio CD)
A small and devoted section of music fans have always known that The Prisoners were special. Graham day, their lead singer and songwriter, has never struggled for respect and the bands influence on a whole host of later bands, though not always discernible in their music, is well documented. The Prisoners music is raw, shorn of all commercial trappings and cannot be pigeon-holed. Tight and edgy, Day has said that no song is worth writing if it cannot be written in three minutes. This vision of intent, this focused stoicism would fuel the bands music, and the music would be good, it could be very good and at times it could be brilliant. Witness `Mourn My Health' on this CD alone, or the complete version of the instrumental `Go, Go' - has there ever been an instrumental like it? The original vinyl copies of Rare and Unissued (Hangman Records) are still much sought after, but with this re-issue, nearly all of The Prisoners back catalogue - with the exception of Live at the MC and The Prisoner vs The Milkshakes - together with a host of other rarities and live-tracks, are now available and so for old fans this new album is a real bonus. For new, prospecting fans, this is as a good a place as any to introduce yourself to the music of The Prisoners. And what a rich vein of music it opens up! From all of The Prisoners albums, to Sins of the Fourfathers (The Prime Movers) to Planet, to everything by The Solar Flares - and don't miss `Can Satisfy You' (Own up Records) - to Graham Day's latest album, the quality of the music that Graham Day, Allan Crockford and Wolf Howard have been involved in at different times, runs on unabated. On this album there are ample sleeve notes from James Taylor, The Prisoners chronicler, Dean Rudland, and the ever affable and perceptive Crockford (check out The Stabilisers too). Overall then this is a great addition to The Prisoners music and is a must buy for any discerning fan of music that is real and raw.
