Customer Review

on 9 May 2012
Such a compelling, inspirational story of a courageous young woman and her memoir of her past, present and future...

Hanna is faced with political and religious challenges and is able to portray these through her book. She is overcome by so many obstacles within society and reveals the true consequences, detachment, disengagement and outrage between the Islamic and Western cultures at that time...

She describes what she felt was the description of shame and honour... and it is fascinating to see how such abuse can derive from those whom are meant to be nurturing and protecting her.

The book was narrated in such a vivid way; almost making each chapter seem as though you were there, in the moment with Hanna.

As a second year student paediatric nurse, to read about such torment to a child, is absolutely shocking. And to then continue to read about how Hanna's father got away with inflicting such punishment, makes myself, as would it any other person, livid..
When you then read about how a person within the health and social care profession would turn a blind eye to what had occurred, instead of protecting and supporting Hanna and her rights as a child, you cannot then imagine how they made their way into the profession and also how many other children had drifted through their web...

The insight into the Qur'an proves astonishing, especially when Hanna started to recite the verses in English. It shows how many things are interpreted different when said within another language.

The book itself, proves how strong the magnitude of religion is and how it governs a lot of things for many people.

A must read; an utterly compelling book...
