I recently picked up a ps3 for the first time after owning just an xbox 360 for the entire last gen (had an xbox one for a couple months but thats a different story) and i have a long list of playstation exclusives i've always wanted to play, with mgs4 near the top of my list.
I've played and enjoyed all the other metal gear solid games years ago and was looking forward to this.
While the visuals hold up surprisingly well for a six year old game, i'm afraid the actual gameplay does not. The controls are clunky to say the least, and the camera is awful. Yes you can 'move' the camera yourself to a certain extent but trust me when i tell you it is still terrible.
I wont get into the long cut scenes and (unintentional) comedy characters but i will say i actually laughed out loud (really) at snakes first monologue where he says the word 'control' about a dozen times. I remember David Hayter's voice acting being good, but let me tell you, here and now in the year 2014 it sounds like will ferrell or seth rogen parodying a mysterious spy down a bad phone line. Fans were up in arms at the news Hayter wouldn't be back for the upcoming mgs5 but now it looks to me to be a good decision.
Speaking of the sound, big shout out to the robotic cows at the start of the game. I knew there and then that i probably should have just left this game in the past!
I had planned to go ahead and pick up the other old mgs games as they have been remastered in hd but after experiencing Guns Of The Patriots i think it would be wise to leave them alone and remember them the way i do as being awseome, instead of ruining my happy memories altogether with a hard dose of reality!
