This review is from: The Manageress - Series 1 [DVD] (DVD)
Last season League Two relegation-bound Grimsby Town sacked yet another manager. One of the names linked to the position was the England coach. Now you may think after England's woeful World Cup performance, that Fabio Capello had realised his true level was Blundell Park and had duly applied for the position. Well you would be wrong. The possibility of the Mariners appointing the England Women's coach Hope Powell was very real, but twenty years ago, Stan Hey created an innovative television drama that made that possibility a fiction reality.

When the chairman (Warren Clarke) struggling 2nd division (old money) side on and off the pitch, decided to appoint Gabriella Benson (Cherie Lunghi) as manager of the team, the whole world was aghast. Prime opponents to the appointment were the assistant manager of the team (Tom Georgeson) and captain (Mark McGann), but they were both won round as results improved on the field. Gabriella brought forward thinking ideas to the club in terms of training, and also combatted racism on the terraces.

Lunghi gives a convincing performance as the new boss, supported by a first rate cast which includes a young Stephen Tompkinson. The football scenes are occasionally a bit iffy, but I look forward to the release of the second series.
