A near-unbearable account of how Haing Ngor survived the Pol Pot regime. I wept constantly while reading it. For me it is in every aspect the best first-hand account from a survivor of the killing fields: brilliantly written and edited, thought-provoking and profoundly moving. I felt the most poignant sections were those in which he examines his own perceived failings, and his raw, honest insights into the Khmer psyche. I cannot recommend this extraordinary book highly enough.
