This review is from: Above Suspicion Series Four - Silent Scream [DVD] (DVD)
I have never read Linda La Plant's novels but have avidly followed all the TV adaptations of those novels and while Prime Suspect with the inimitable Helen Mirren is my favourite, I also enjoyed this series. The stories are usually gritty and the police procedurals spot on- to my layman's eye.
Above Suspicion 4 Silent Scream concerns the murder of a young film actress, Amanda Delaney and the investigation soon shows that Amanda's life was far from perfect. She had quite a few dark secrets and was about to publish her memoires which might best be described as controversial.
Ciaran Hinds is a top class actor and is marvellous as DCS James Langton. There is a lot of sexual tension between Langton and the much younger D.I. Anna Travis, played by Kelly Reilly, and this chemistry adds to, and drives the series forward. I hope there is a series 5 in the pipeline, even if only to discover what transpires between this pair following the cliffhanger ending in series 4. It is true that the series is not up to the standard of the marvellous Prime Suspect or even the early episodes of Trial and Retribution starring Kate Buffery, where the plots were tighter and more believable. The danger is that Lynda La Plant may run out of plot ideas as she has certainly been most prolific over the past fifteen years or so. Still we can but hope.
Worth watching these detectives!
