Customer Review

on 29 June 2002
Lateralus is quite simply the best of all of tool's albums. Lateralus offers lyrics that no other artist has offered in mainstream music so far. From The Grudge (which is about the orbit of saturn and a grudge between two people) to parabola (apparently about the bond between two metaphysical bodies) tool gives us a very different aspect of the band musically and lyrically, for example, the tracks disposition and reflection are not rock at all. The main instrument in both tracks is the tabla (an indian drum) which helps give the tracks a very spiritual feeling. Another good aspect is the lack of "skits" e.g cesaro to suimmability (aenima). The three skits in this album are very good however and are worth listening to. Eon blue apocalypse is a basic guitar prelude to the track the patient. And if you are a fan of the guitar you will really appreciate it! Mantra is....strange and apparently the sound of Maynard's cat when he sqeased it.(?!?!?!?)But kind of sets the tone for schism, one of the best tracks on the album. And finally faaip de oaid which is about a former scientist who is talking about aliens etc. It has danny playing the drums in the backround while the scientist is talking. Beware, do not listen late at night with no lights as it is very eerie! It is a very good ending to a brilliant album. If you are a fan of tool, and you do not have this album, kick yourself, ask why you haven't purchased it already and buy it immediately. No music fans collection is complete without it. Also, to those of you who have seen tool's video's and have been put off by it, don't be. I was at first too, but it is the music that counts. Just listen to the music and close your eyes whilst the video plays! And finally do not get too influenced by the reviews, whether they have or have not convinced you to buy a tool album. My advice? Listen to the samples, and see if tool is for you. If you are a fan of the more mtv friendly a perfect circle you may not like tool as they are very musically different and are much more philosophical and i suppose weird! But if you like bands like the deftones who are very musically different to most bands and like bands who are not mainstream etc. buy lateralus. Above all sample the tracks. Now.
