This review is from: Patrick Leigh Fermor: An Adventure (Hardcover)
PLF was an extremely interesting person who wrote some very good books but most importantly was a constant traveller getting involved in some very exciting adventures. The book charted carefully his interesting life and gripped my attention for the most part rendering unable to put the book down until the very end. The only adverse comment I have to make is that very rarely did I feel that the author managed to get under the skin of her subject. I wanted to know more about his feelings , fears, the excitement and the expectations and not simply read the description of how he looked to her from a respectful distance. She invariably describes him as a restless individual, a sponger, a womaniser even a gigolo. He was perhaps all of these things but what really drove him except women, drink and bonhonie? He used to reguraly fall into periods of deep depression
which means he was either missing something or was hid own worst critric thinking perhaps that he had achieved very little in his life. One gets the impression that he was drifting into events and capers without much passion and without much emotion as though it was something to do and not a life changing event. Even his portayal in the Ill met by moonlight is one of a non chalant fellow out on a scout cross country aventure masking the worry and fear that must have riven him and his fellow soldiers in their momentous adventure.
In any case I enjoyed the book enormously and thank the author for bringing to life such a wonderful person.
