2.0 out of 5 stars There Will Be Hype !!!, 3 Feb. 2010
This review is from: There Will Be Blood (Single Disc Edition) [DVD] (DVD)
What the hell happened here? Daniel Day Lewis gurns his way through yet another pantomime making Jack Nicholson in "The Shining" look like Leslie Howard in "Gone With The Wind". This Day Lewis chap has forgotten how to act ever since the sublime "Age Of Innocence". Perhaps he's better off cobbling shoes in Italy afterall. As for the film itself, wow, what a mess. It's like Elmer Gantry versus the Vicar Of Dibley. And with regard to the baby faced Jesus Freak, why is it he never ages even, when twenty years or so have passed by the time he's reunited with Daniel Day Lewis in the final reel. Perhaps the good lord staved off the ageing process for this infant prodigy. Also, where the hell did his twin brother run off to?

The story is meant to be some kind of genesis story for American capitalism but ends up being a cautionary tale for any young writer/director who wants to see what a bloated talent ends up creating when he's left to run amok. I loved Magnolia. It was an incredible film. One of the best from that entire decade. But this ridiculous film is just a farce. You don't care about any of the characters and when you're investing 3 hours with them, you want something in return. Even Jake La Motta in "Raging Bull" had some redeeming aspects. His reluctance to "throw a fight" for instance.

As for the bizarre soundtrack by some Radiohead geekoid I have no idea how he got the job. He ends up trying to be all "Kubrickesque" but just sounds like a bored A leval student who has just handed in a "botch job" for his end of term project.

Anyway, if you want to watch a film about capitalism, just watch the film this one wants to be. "The Treasure Of Sierra Madre" is this movie and more and you won't be bored I guarantee. Watch "There Will Be Blood", then watch "Madre". It's a real lesson.

ad hoc says:
Just in case you were interested, the absence of his twin brother is supposed to raise the question of whether they're the same person, and he's running a con on Day-Lewis. Not the best executed idea, but still...
