Having lived in the city of Medan and Lake Toba too where this docu is set ,and having met "gangsters" there, my feelings about this film are very mixed. Ten years ago every street had gangsters there 24 hours a day to "protect" your house. You paid them protection money to be "safe". Mostly from them it has to be said. Now they have been removed from the streets by various goverments since the first proper elections since Suharto's military regime fell. Which is a start...
The problem is that it is not what you know but who you know in Indonesia. Corruption is everywhere. The people who do business as it happens in the west are the Indonesian Chinese. Orang cina. They are mostly disliked by the native Indonesians who in general think business equals corruption. You want to become a doctor then you buy your job from a doctor that leaves and you make your money back by squeezing the dying and ill and their relatives and friends. If you don't get the money you will not get treated.
The Chinese are like pre second world war Jews. It is very difficult for them but they tend to bring a stability to the area. They can make a business work and are hated for it. So sad for the Chinese.
In the film one of the gangsters talks about his Chinese girlfriend and how he murders her dad. There is a blind hatred that fills native Indonesians and sometimes spills over into violence where the Chinese are concerned. Sad.
The scene where the gangsters are collecting money with menace from the small Chinese business people. The Chinese make money in Indonesia because they will treat you well because they want you to come back. The Native Indonesian, in general, will onlybe thinking of the present and how to sting you.
Watch this film. It's how a country shouldn't be run. Strngely enough the uk is becoming as silly in many ways, similar to Indonesia. Blaming other people for the countries woes and stirring up racial and religious hatred with their foreign policies. Indonesia being an archipelago it's foreign policy takes it to Timor, Papua, Ache etc etc, all places within Indonesia but so ethnically different.
I have heard it rumoured that the Bali bombs that killed so many tourists was nothing to do with Islamic extremists but set off by the Indonesian army as they weren't encouraged to get into the lucrative tourist scene, which is or was a very lucrative thing to have a business in. But you would of thought that the army and the polce who grow and deal the marajuana in Indonesia (or their stooges) that that would be enough for them...?! Semingly not. So, the delicate balance between, the military, who have a certain amount of unelected seats in parliament and democracy...is a tenuous one. Seeemingly, you can always blame the Chinese or anyone that gets in the powermongers way if inclined. 17 th richest country in the world. Gad. 10 placss up and it will rival the uk.
