Can anything this dark be called good?,
This review is from: 8mm [DVD] (DVD)
I can see why this was largely slated when released. I have seen countless films, but this has to rate as one of the darkest, grimest and bleakest films I have ever sat through. That said, it is compelling - Joaquin Phoenix is the standout as the nice guy doing a despicable job ("Battery operated *%$£^* sir?".) Cage is either asleep or playing it understated a la Scheider's Chief Brody. What the film does have going for it BIG TIME are two or three of cinema's most diabolical bad guys, unremittingly evil people - a standout is the snuff director who let's nothing as trivial as human life get in the way of art - like some megolomaniac expressionist auteur from the 1920s!!
I think this film will become a minor classic, but is that a good thing?
