Beethoven Piano Concertos,
This review is from: Beethoven - Piano Concertos 3, 4 & 5 [Hybrid SACD] (Audio CD)
I bought this 2-disc CD after reading the reviews here. I must say I was disappointed. The recording quality does not do justice to the SACD medium. It is so closed in and without any depth and so 2 dimensional. The Linn recording technique has not worked here. The 2-disc Mozart concertos were a delight to listen to.
Also the playing is nowhere near as good as Zimmerman's or Serkin's. The second movement of 5th is played with almost no emotion. If compared to the Zimmerman/Abbado/Berlin Philharmonic recording this one is too methodical and with almost no passion. Even the lovely playing of SCO/Mackerras is not enough to merit more than 2 star.
If you want to hear an electrifying recording with a very different interpretation of the 3rd concerto in SACD then try the Olli Mustonen. It is beautifully recorded with all the majestic grandeur of the SACD medium can offer.
Still my best choice is the 3-disc Zimmerman/Abbado/BPO box set even though it is not SACD.

What is the "3-disc Zimmerman/Abbado/BPO box set" you mentioned? Can you elaborate? I'm only aware of the K. Zimerman/Bernstein/WP and Pollini/Abbado/BP sets, both on DG.

Absolutely right: "Zimerman" (with one m) only recorded the Beethoven piano concertos with Bernstein and the VPO in 1991/92 (masterful stuff!); Abbado and Zimerman have never collaborated. It looks like someone needs a combined fact-and-spelling checker ;) lol...
