BUY THIS BOOK! - FABULOUS SELECTION OF A GREAT POET,
This review is from: Sea-Fever. Selected Poems of John Masefield. Edited with an Introduction by Philip W. Errington (Paperback)
This is a truly stunning selection! I had no idea that John Masefield was such a fantastic poet.
Many people know The Midnight Folk and The Box of Delights - and if they don't, they should. Many people know 'Sea-Fever' ("I must down to the seas again...") or 'Cargoes' ("Quinquireme of Nineveh from distant Ophir"). But nothing prepared me for this book. Masefield's scope is varied: from sonnets to long narrative poems with his subjects ranging from the sea (obviously) to World War and even JFK!
In 247 pages there are a huge number of poems selected from a huge number of original sources. I get the sense that I'm being presented with some of the best of Masefield by somebody who really knows where to find it. This book is a joy and deserves to be on the shelves of anyone who has even a passing interest in poetry or indeed English or American literature.
Masefield, it seems, was once a best-selling author in both the U.S. and the U.K. I am amazed he is not better known! Two words of advice "BUY IT!"
