2.0 out of 5 stars Big disappointment, 4 Jan. 2009
This review is from: The Diary Of A Provincial Lady (VMC Designer Collection) (Hardcover)
I have loved 'Diary of a Provincial Lady' for years, so when this edition appeared on my Amazon 'suggestions for you' page, I immediately put it on my Christmas list.
But beware! WHAT YOU SEE IS NOT WHAT YOU GET!
I assumed that when I clicked on the 'Look inside' button, I was indeed looking inside that edition - specifically at the contents page, which showed all three of the 'Diaries'. Not so. I, and the donor, were bitterly disappointed to find that this beautiful Cath Kidston covered edition is only the first 'Diary' and does NOT include the other two. I contacted Amazon and was told I should have researched more carefully before placing an order.

So if you think you are buying a trilogy - you aren't! I would not have gone for this edition if I had realised that it was only one 'Diary'. I would have looked for the trilogy instead.

I had the same experience. I thought I had made sure that this was the trilogy before I ordered. I also checked the Search Inside facility, which sent me to the paperback edition, so it was no help and indeed was misleading. Your review had not appeared when I ordered the book, otherwise I might have thought again; but now it is here and it looks so pretty that I decided not to send it back. I don't like the cover of the paperback trilogy edition, so I shall just wait until it is redesigned before replacing my ancient and disintegrating copy. Amazon can be very slapdash about product descriptions, especially where there are multiple editions, and they are no better with DVDs and CDs than they are with books. It is their one failing, and I hope they will address it, as it mars their otherwise excellent standard of service.

Edited to add: I am also annoyed with Virago for failing to include the two subsequent volumes in this very attractive edition. It seems needlessly mean just to use the first volume; 'Wartime' is in some ways the most interesting of the three.

So which actual copy has all three in? What picture does it have on the cover?

Lulu says:
There is now a reprint of the three-volume Virago 1984 edition; as usual, Amazon's publication details leave a lot to be desired, so it can only be identified by the fact that it has a new introduction by Jilly Cooper and the Cath Kidston print cover and is a paperback. We got there in the end.

My copy looks exactly like yours (bought May 2013) and contains all 4 books. - PL Goes Further, PL in America and PL at War as well as the first one. It's a wonderful read and a nice edition to hold in your hands. I'm very satisfied!

Thank you so much for this review. so helpful and informative.
As an author myself I collect special hard back editions. I was attracted to the cover for obvious reasons knowing the diaries well. However without your information I would have been so disappointed when the book arrived. I will continue my search elsewhere. Vera Waters
