Many of us know what it's like to have our every day monitored by relatives, neighbours, workmates and ex's who may or may not have our best interests at heart. This is life for Lola Watson, but she feels more stressed as her thirtieth birthday approaches, because her sister has decided to get married on that day. Lola's best friend suggests that she one-up her sister by bringing a hot date to the event. Suddenly Lola finds herself embroiled in a tug of attention between an old boyfriend suffering loneliness after a breakup, and a new neighbour who is somehow too attractive to ignore. Will everyone's constant intrusion upset Lola's confused plans, and who's she meant to be with anyway?
Karen McQuestion's writing is quick and easy, but somehow the story rolls along too lightly and predictably to really engage a reader in any sense of tension. This is a pleasent holiday read, light and breezy, but I found myself growing rather frustrated at a lack of any real emotional charge or great wit.
