Based on a short story (which I haven't read), this is quite an original film although ultimately not really satisfying. Visually, it's absolutely stunning and the French and Japanese settings are captured with superb photograpy. However, beautiful imagery alone does not make a feature film; there needs to be a strong sense of narrative, plus engagement with the characters and this is where "Silk" falls down somewhat. Possibly in a commendable bid to avoid Hollywood cliche and the "pile on the emotion" superficiality of so many modern films, all the actors here underplay their roles to such an extent that it's difficult to feel any empathy with their characters. In the same way, the film makers have gone for very slow pacing, which again could have been a welcome change from the breakneck speed and delivery of so many films today, but here they've just gone a shade too far and the whole thing has a rather limp and soporific feel. It is by no means a bad film and probably worth seeing for the photography alone, but one feels that with just a slight change in pace and character portrayal it could have been a whole lot better.
