Works but not as well as hoped,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Asustek Xonar D1 PCI Low Profile Sound Card (Accessory)
This card is great in that it is low profile, PCI, and has Optical Audio Out which were the main considerations for me. I have unfortunately ended up replacing it though as after one week of use it was not meeting my expectations.
The card was installed in a HTPC running Windows 7 and set to play all media, TV, DVDs etc through Media Center on our principal TV. The Optical Out was used to connect up to a Sonos Playbar and also through two Sonos Play:3 speakers wirelessly from the Playbar for rear channels.
What I liked:
*As ever with Amazon delivery was quick and painless.
*Card installed easily in spare PCI slot
*Software installed easily and quickly using the latest version from the Asustek website which was easy to find.
What I didn't like:
*The software, whilst easy to install is not intuitive, not a control panel with easy to identify settings but a floating window styled to look like the equalizer of a high end amp. Lots of gloss, little substance for what I was looking for.
*The Optical Out connection is via an inline connector which takes it from the familiar square plug in to a circular socket like a normal 3.5mm headphone socket. This didn't give me much confidence in how well the cable would stay in place
*Random 'popping' regardless of how i connected the optical cable, to the Sonos Playbar, to the TV direct or to another amp. It happened with all types of media and programs I used too. Hasn't happened since replacing with card from another manufacturer.
Whilst this card didn't meet my expectations, it doesn't make it a bad card. My dislike of the software could be put down to personal taste and the issues with popping sound could be down to my hardware or codec issues (although i did spend a long time trying to rule out it being these issues). On a different system or with different requirements like gaming or music, you may find this is the ideal card for you. Unfortunately based on my own experiences I would struggle to recommend it though.
