Customer Review

First part...WW1 1916, a small village in France where the Germans have arrived to cause untold anguish and despair for the inhabitants. Sophie has returned to the family hotel for the duration of the war as her husband, the famous artist Edouard Lefevre is called to do his duty. Running the family hotel with her siblings becomes intolerable as the new Kommandant takes a shine to Sophie and her portrait which her husband painted for her just before the war began. His interest soon turns to obsession and it is with unimaginable terror that Sophie soon realises the price she might have to pay to keep her family safe through the hostilities. Part two...present day, Liv is trying to recover from the sudden loss of her husband who dies after only four years of blissful marriage. Her only consolation is the painting he gave to her on their honeymoon, that same painting which went missing from France shortly after the end of WW1 which now appears to have become priceless and the family want it back!! This is such an amazing story which draws you in from the first few pages and keeps the reader riveted until the final, unexpected conclusion. Whether you love Sophie's heart breaking story or Livvy's present day courtroom battle as she desperately tries to hang onto her painting, I can promise you, you will need a box of tissues!! An unusual novel, obviously raising some questions but I can honestly say it is one of the best novels I have recently read, fantastic!
