Customer Review

on 3 June 2012
I've never written a review on here before but after witnessing this travesty I had to say something about this game. Normally a Rockstar game is a seal of quality for me and don't get me wrong - the production values on this game are great. However when it comes to the gameplay I can tell you that Rockstar really didn't get it.

Max Payne was meant to make you feel powerful in a Matrix kind of way. What Rockstar have done is put too much of their own crap into it. You spend most of your time watching cut scene after cut scene after cut scene. Then in the middle of these cut scenes you get a little bit of gunplay - frustrating gunplay at that. Often when a cutscene finishes it puts you straight in the battle in harms way and max doesn't respond for precious seconds while bad guys have already started shooting at you. So your health has diminished before you've even started. (I'm only playing on medium difficulty by the way) Then to make matters worse when max lands on the floor after a shoot dodge it takes him ages to stand up again. And this can happen when enemies are still shooting at you. So the chances are you will keep dying on the floor because the 'max standing up animation' takes way too long.

Also the weapons don't hit the sweet spot any way near like the first two games did. You can't carry as many weapons. You have to do that stupid dropping thing to be able to pick another gun up. I don't care about realism - I want to be able to choose between a sawed off shotgun, a grenade launcher, a machine gun or dual berettas!!!! Also the dual wield thing is odd. The game never gives you time to sort your 'inventory' out. So i still haven't figured out if i can dual wield berettas. The only thing it keeps giving me to dual wield is a 9mm and the little uzi type thing (can't remember the name of guns - sue me!)

Also the overly difficult gameplay forces you to take cover a lot - or you won't last long. Again - that is what bullet time is for!!! To make you feel powerful!!! Max payne is about walking into an 'action bubble' then being able to take out bad guys in a really stylish way. If i wanted to keep taking cover behind an object I would play Gears of War!!!

Occasionally there is a cool fight sequence in quite a cool location but it is soon ruined by a cut scene again.

So to sum up, this could have been great but Rockstar constantly keeps taking the game out of the players hands - which for me is unforgivable. REMEDY! COME BACK AND FIX MY FAVOURITE FRANCHISE OF ALL TIME!!! Rockstar - stick to Red Dead! (Or make a movie and get it off your chest!)

Sorry about that - rant over!
