When I first heard that the Phonics' were due a new release I felt a sickening sense of apprehension. Was it going to be another Rod Stewart pastiche session (J.E.E.P), or were they going to return to the brash, hard edged raw rock of their best album 'Word Gets Around'?...The actual result is closer to Rod Stewart, Richard Carpenter and Thom Yorke becoming bedfellows with Steve Tyler who has just misplaced his guitar. HELP ME (Shes Out Of Her Mind) 2/5. Almost seven minutes of medium paced laboured riffing. A good song...way too long. MAYBE TOMORROW 4/5. Very different for the Phonics'. Bordering on straightforward pop but with a rock hybrid. Interesting. MADAME HELGA 4/5. A standard song by the Phonics. Listenable. YOU STOLE MY MONEY HONEY 4/5. Not exactly a Kelly Jones song! More Macca! Quite good though. Bouncy. GETAWAY 5/5. I like this song, despite its scarily like Have A Nice Day intro which is the same wordless 'doh doh doh', but with a more awkward, jagged rhythm. Its different, light, upbeat and really works well. CLIMBING THE WALL 4/5. Out of all the types of music in the world...why did Kelly have to choose the '70's Brass & Strings sound?...the idea of the song is cool, but its just not the Phonics. As a musician, Im all for change...but this is more like regression! JEALOUSY 3/5. Tired. Laboured. Formulaic riff rock. IM ALRIGHT 2/5. The skill for a semi-dance wrist slitter should be left to Evanescence and the like. NOTHING PRECIOUS AT ALL 5/5. Possibly the best song on the album. A solid m-o-r Phonics number, with enough difference from previous to show a glimmer of progression. RAINBOWS & POTS OF GOLD 3/5. the idea is ok...but there is not enough variation. Theres monotonic...radiohead...and then this! I MISS YOU NOW 4/5. Its OK is suppose. It works. But there's where it ends. Oh, hang on...Kelly's vocals are good on this song. HIGH AS THE CEILING 5/5. Good. Ballsy. Works. Different. SINCE I TOLD YOU ITS OVER 3/5. Why?... Its OK. But sounds just like the rest. Tired. Kelly Produced...without the skill. His voice has improved though. The ideas are there but not developed. This sounds like a band who are on the verge of losing it...and are living on what success they have had. There is no 'Just Looking', no 'Traffic'...but there may be a contender for the labouring sounds of 'Vegas Two Times'. Though up against this album...'Vegas'' and JEEP have considerable merits.
