Men love pies, girls like hummus - I'm gay and enjoy both! Maybe I'm not the demographic... Ironic from a man called Rimmer!
Aside from the sexism and occasional references to brokeback mountain (seriously) this is a pretty decent cookbook. One of the other reviewers summed it up very well when using the term "gastro pub" which is very much what this is.
What I really enjoyed about this is that it isn't exactly a beginners book. Now don't misunderstand me, there are some good and simple recipes here (shepherds pie with cauliflower cheese topping was much easier than I expected with an incredible result and lots of oohs and ahhs at the table) but there are also some more challenging recipes as well (lobster and smoked salmon choux for example would take a bit of practise but the end result certainly looks worth it)
And I like to be challenged, I have hundreds of cook books and while not the most accomplished cook in the world I like to have a go and be inspired and this book does help with that
It is written in Simon's friendly manner and you do actually feel you are chatting to an old friend at times which is nice and reassuring (especially when experimenting with the Goan green curry which was incredible even f I had to substitute tamarind bulb with paste sorry Simon, but come on who has a tamarind bulb lying around the house?)
All in all this is a very good cookbook and there are a couple of new favourites and isn't that what a cookbook should be?
