A refreshing, magical, 'romantic' take on PD James' usual Modus Operandi. The sheer seclusion of the island has a Christie like ruthless efficiency in terms of plotting.
Her use of landscape to evoke emotion and situation, or just for the joy of describing it, is as strong as ever. Her charactierisation is razor sharp, particularly of Dalgliesh and Miskin. I genuinely had no sense of the novel's direction, and greatly enjoyed the contemporary twist to the plotline.
